The term “naturism” (see also nudism) is generally believed to Have been coined by Jean Baptiste Luc Planchon in 1778. He defined the naturism as natural health and life.

The earliest naturist club was established in 1891 in British India.

The International Naturist Federation definition of naturism is

Naturism is a way of life in harmony with nature, characterized by the practice of communal nudity, with the intention of encouraging respect for oneself, respect for others and for the environment. 1)THE OFFICIAL INF-FNI DEFINITION OF NATURISM

While in many places naturism is considered the same as nudism, many people consider the two as different.

Nudists generally want to be nude as much as possible; be it at home, in a garden, on a beach, etc.

Naturists generally want to be nude in nature, connecting with it in the purest, most human (naked) form. Sunbathing, hiking, swimming and doing sports are very popular things to do for naturists (and nudists).

According to Marc Alain Descamps2)NATURIST SOCIETY PROJECT

Naturists want to respect nature, to deviate as little as possible, to return as much as possible to natural inspiration and when it is essential to correct nature without falling into abuses and depredations.

In his book Living Naked:The Psychology of Naturism Descamps suggests

Naturism is practised in many ways: Marc Alain Descamps,[8] in his study written in French, classified the types as: individual nudism, nudism within family, nudism in the wild, social nudism.
