Considered by some a precursor to modern European naturism was a spiritual practice started by Jacob Bohme a German mystic who lived in the late 16th and early 17th century.  a 1)Dare, Robert :Food power and community – Essay in the history of food and drink 1999 page 156 Bohme offered a spiritual perspective that suggested the practice of naturism or social naked was a return to the innocence of Adam and Eve before their corruption. He also thought that nakedness reflected the biblical virtues of equality found in the New Testament section of the Christian Bible.


Bohme’s spiritual teachings also promoted compassion to animals and considered the slaughter of animals a barrier between God and human being. As a result a vegetarian diet was preferred by followed of this spiritual practice.
