A trio of nudie apps – review

This trio of apps for iPhone and iPad helps the iDevice using nudist/naturist find places to practice clothes free recreation. This is not a comparative review but individual reviews of apps that serve a similar purpose for nudists. AANRmobile, iSwim nude and World Nude Beach Guide attempt to provide a practical information for nude recreation in the mobile devices using the iOS platform.

iSwimnude describes itself as

“the App for the naturist. It’ll show you where other people go swimming in the nude and allows you to post your own locations.”

The app requires access to your location in order to provide appropriate lists of nude swim locations. The app asks to use your location when first launched. If you choose not to give permission at that time you can turn this on later from the privacy setting of you iDevice. Though designed for the iPhone/iPod the app functions as well on the iPad in single or 2x mode.

Once it can ascertain your location iSwimnude provides a list of places for skinny dipping with the distance to the location in either kilometers or miles. The locations can also be viewed as pins on a map. The app returned 25 locations on my test as close as 100 miles and as far as 500 miles.  However several nudist venues close by we’re not listed. I suspect this is due to the user submitted nature of the app.

Once a location is chosen from the list or the pin map, additional information such as an address, web site, email and directions (that can be routed through the maps app) are provided. The location can also be viewed as an individual pin on a map and some locations also have ratings and comments attached.

If your regular nude  swim location is not listed you can add it to the iSwimnude listings with some conditions using the app’s I swim here feature. The location must be entered while at the location as the app uses GPS location to determine the exact location accurate to plus or minus 71 yards according to the app manual.

You can only post locations when you are at that place!

There is also space for adding a description of the location. Then you can send the information to the listing database. This listing can be withdrawn up to two hours after it is sent after which it becomes a permanent part of the database.

Some interesting future additional to the app might be adding some social networking feature like sharing locations to twitter or Facebook in addition to the already present email function.

AANR Mobile

The description of only official iPhone app of the American Association of Nude Recreation says

Allows you to carry a bit of the AANR philosophy and club details in your pocket”

Version 1.1 of the app features the distinct sections a FAQ of often asked questions about nudism in general, a listing of AANR affiliated clubs grouped by state and a feed of AANR news. The FAQ section covers the kind of issues familiar to long time nudist but likely to be asked by first timers or new comers to the clothes free recreation. My favorite question of the lot is about nude volleyball.

The club listings are grouped alphabetically by state and can be scrolled on the right side of the app. Click on a listing and a detail page opens with contact information for landed and non landed clubs. Address email, website, phone and even map links are provided. The listings are static and map links open a browser to Google Maps rather than using the Apple Maps or Google Maps apps.

The final section has some limited news from AANR drawn from the web site. If you are a AANR member and want to find an affiliated club when traveling or a venue for a nakation this app is a no brainer.

World Nude Beach Guide

Like the previously reviewed iSwimNude, World Nude Beach Guide generates a list of nude beach options from an online  database based on your location.  The app opens to a map of the US and Canada with all the current nude beach locations 163 at this writing. Zooming in to a region or  area on the refines the list. Details for a beach location can  be accessed by pin marked by a N in the map view or going to the list view and choosing location there.

The detail view includes the name of the beach, a link to directions from Google Maps, a brief description of the beach, a rating and photo.  Additional features of the detail view are a satellite map, an option to update or add information and add the location to a list of favorites.

The rest of the app includes a favorites list and the option to add a nude beach location to the database. All submissions are reviewed for accuracy and relevance according to information in the app. Wile it might not be sophisticated World Nude Beach Guide  provides a simple but effective way to locate a place to go skinny dipping.

  1. These look like great apps if you are traveling or visiting a new town that you have never been to, these can certainly come in handy. I like how they use the pins on the map, it really makes it easy to locate the nude beaches that may be close to you. Pretty cool stuff, kudos to the app developers.
